Middle Childhood Generalist Standards National Board Practice Exam

Standards that guide middle childhood learning encourage using a variety of media and the arts to deepen understanding and invite different ways of looking at a topic. When students explore through film, music, art, or digital media, they encounter meanings beyond a single reading and can connect ideas across forms. Asking them to explain their interpretations with rationales shows how they’re using evidence, reasoning, and contextual clues to support their thinking. This combination—enriching curricula with media and the arts and requiring multiple interpretations with justified rationales—best reflects that approach. Limiting to printed texts, using only assigned readings with no media, or enforcing a single interpretation without justification all miss the opportunity to develop multimodal literacy and critical thinking.
